An undisputed classic of 20th-century Mediterranean residential architecture, Can Lis is perched on a cliff near the fishing village of Portopetro, on the south coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca. Renowned Danish modernist and visionary Jørn Utzon dedicated the residence to his wife Lis, and together they spent more than two decades in the house. Utzon started to work on Can Lis’s design while the Sydney Opera House was still in progress. Find out more in Sublime Hideaways.
Situated in the Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo, Casa Azul by Studio MK27 also lies within the environmental preservation area of Serra do Guararu. Although it might be difficult to believe, Weekend House Straume, situated on the rocky islet of Sildegarnsholmen, came from humble origins. In designing this home, Knut Hjeltnes Arkitekter had the peculiar challenge of recreating the spatial structure of an old warehouse. The islet has belonged to the family of the house’s current residents—Peter and Marianne—for many generations, hence their interest in making a permanent home there. This project is also featured in Sublime Hideaways.
Every project by acclaimed Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao has its own distinct style, but all are united by a similarly thoughtful approach to design. In addition to their striking beauty, her projects are marked by an interest in sustainable development and a hyper-attentiveness to place. Her houses and architectural projects are presented in Sublime Hideaways by gestalten.

Solo House by Office Kersten Geers David van Severen is a circular house almost melts into the forest, emphasizing and showcasing the natural surroundings.
