In Plain Sight with Bernhard Lang

There is nothing like a beach day: Warm sand, hot sun rays, blue seas, and a salty breeze are hard to beat. German photographer Bernhard Lang took to the skies to document the coastal paradises that line Viareggio in north Tuscany for his “Versilia” series. Lang shot the sandy alcoves head on, translating the resort towels and umbrellas into a soothing visual pattern and the beachgoers into points on an abstract grid. To find the perfect angle for his photos, which are available as print editions on his website, Lang shoots beaches and urban cityscapes out of an airplane or a helicopter. See more from the series below, or take a look at other artists using photography as a way to visualize data in our book PhotoViz.
