For decades, the image of Afghanistan presented to the world has been shaped by conflict. Yet its story is also one of remarkable diversity, enduring traditions, and everyday acts of humanity.

Created over multiple years and journeys, Afghanistan is a deeply personal project by Afghan-American visual artist Daniel Malikyar. Through more than 130 photographs and a series of accompanying essays, the book offers an intimate portrait of the people, landscapes, and cultures that have long existed beyond the narratives most often associated with the country.

Traveling independently across remote regions, Malikyar documented communities rarely photographed by outsiders, capturing moments shaped by trust and shared heritage, revealing a side of Afghanistan seldom seen.

Daniel Malikyar is a renowned Afghan-American photographer and filmmaker. As the son of Afghan refugees, he builds bridges between cultures through his authentic and socially engaged visual narratives. Malikyar has worked with global brands such as HBO, Amazon Prime, and YouTube Originals, collaborated with world-famous personalities, and produced award-winning documentaries. His projects combine journalistic accuracy with cinematic vision. He divides his time between the US and international assignments.
