For the architects at Proctor & Shaw, the commission to renovate a cramped apartment in North London became both an exercise in innovation and a rebuttal to the idea that size is everything. Shoji Apartment is a project of small apartment featured in Pretty Small, a book by gestalten.

A small apartment in Katowice’s design district was given a facelift by Mistovia to make it an eye-catching addition to the rental market. Perfectly positioned on the 11th floor of a 1970s block in the center of town, with views of the Silesian Museum and the International Congress Center, the apartment AFR Koszutka was redesigned to make it stand out from the preponderance of bland, neutral rental properties on the market.

ABACO maximized all available space in a small apartment in a 1990s Parisian building to create a singular home for two actors. As performers, the clients needed the living room to be open and dynamic, with furniture and functions designed to fit snugly into the boundary walls, leaving a stage for their practice. The principal furniture elements are united in a single, unique piece of oak furniture. This project by Studio ABACO is featured in Pretty Small, a book by gestalten.
The architect of this project featured in Pretty Small was inspired by the clients’ Greek heritage and chose to infuse the home with the colors of their homeland—the traditional bright-white paint found in Greek architecture and the blue of the Aegean Sea.

Partitions in brick and MDF panels jut out from the central columns in a joyous zigzag formation. With just a single window, Mistovia found innovative ways to keep the space bright, such as building the curved wall of the bathroom from glass tiles—also a nod to the building’s modernist heritage. Stainless-steel cabinets bounce light off mirrored doors and surfaces, and one wall has been stripped back to its original concrete. AFR Koszutka is featured in Pretty Small by gestalten.
Homes that help you inhabit a small space together while maintaining levels of privacy and individuality can help. Athens-based architecture practice SOUTH, for example, transformed an unused basement space in the Greek capital into a 40m2 (431ft2 ) custom studio apartment. While basement apartments tend to evoke images of cramped, windowless, damp spaces, this one, located in the Lycabettus Hill area, is quite the opposite.
The transformation of a former print shop in Madrid was a very personal project for two members of the Nomos team, as La Nave would become their family home. Featured in Pretty Small, the architects are making the shift from an open-plan industrial layout to a domestic structure, which required a complete recalibration of the space.
